CHILDREN & YOUTH

Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." (Matthew 19:14)

Children are welcomed and valued at St. Thomas’. We believe they are a gift from God and we want to support parents as they seek to raise their children to love God and know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour.

Sunday School

Our Sunday School children are quite active in our Parish. They bring light and life into everything they do, from their re-telling of the Christmas story in their pageant to dramatizing the story of the Cross. Children gather during the 10:30am worship service to listen to a themed conversation and then go to their Sunday School classes. The children return to partake in the Eucharist and they also often will lead in worship during Communion with dancing and flags.

Here at St. Thomas’ our Sunday School uses the WHIRL curriculum -a new spin on Sunday school! Scripture–based lessons with engaging animations help children relate the Bible to their daily lives.

Children also share in the life of the church with this lectionary-centered program for pre-K through grade 6. A WHIRL lesson follows a four-part sequence: Welcome, Hear, Respond, and Launch (WHRL!).

Each week, students and their teachers start their time together in a large group with a gathering of their offering followed by praise & worship songs. They conclude the large group session by identifying where they are in the church year and with an introduction to the day’s lesson. The children then move into their classes, some watching an animated video to set up the lesson. Next, they dive into the Whirl Story Bible or Whirl NRSV Bible together, respond to the scripture lesson with creative leaflet activities, and finally review the lesson and pray before being sent out.

Confirmation

Looking to be confirmed?

Confirmation is a sacrament of the church and is a way to recognize, welcome, and celebrate what God is doing in your life. It is a commitment to a life of following Christ. Through the laying on of the Bishop’s hands, God’s grace and the presence of the gift of His Holy Spirit is confirmed within you and your life in the Christian faith, service, and witness.

Confirmation is a personal step of faith. It is when you take on for yourself the promises that were made on your behalf at your baptism as a child. Although Confirmation is typically held for young people ages 11-12 and older, anyone meeting this requirement may choose to seek Confirmation.

Here at St. Thomas’, anyone seeking Confirmation first becomes a candidate and along with their sponsors must attend special classes throughout the year. We hold a service of Confirmation every two years.

For more information concerning Confirmation, please contact our Child & Youth Lay Minister

Youth Ministry

At St. Thomas’ we celebrate and delight in the unique gifts of the young people in our Parish. Our youth ministry currently focuses on youth ages 12 to 18. While our youth may participate in weekly liturgies by becoming a server or taking a turn operating our PowerPoint slideshow, there are also special ministries geared just towards them.

Jr. High Bible Study Class – This class happens each week during the 10:30am worship service while following the regular schedule of Sunday School from September through to June. Youth gather with volunteer teachers during the service to study the Word, to ask questions, to pray together and to find encouragement in seeking God in their everyday lives.

Youth Group – Our youth meet outside of a Sunday morning for regular youth group gatherings twice a month, one Friday and one Sunday night. These nights most often are based on a topic where games, worship, prayer and bible study are focused on the theme. Some favourite activities are outreach missions, overnight retreats and eating fabulous food!

The youth of St. Thomas’ have hosted the Youth Film Series from Alpha Canada and have also been attending YC-NL (the largest multi-denominational youth conference in our province) for several years.

Whether it is an inspiring bible study, fun-filled activities or just hangin’ out, youth find a place to be themselves to connect with God in a positive and powerful way.
